These 103 poems explore grief, loneliness, thoughts and memories arising from lost love. As he’s done in previous collections, Stevenson (Moon Talk, 2016) pays close attention to the particularities of losing a beloved, finding a range of images to portray each gradation of feeling. “The most beautiful body is the absent one / The most beautiful night is the absent sun.” Stevenson offers some striking and effective images for romantic love… These poems effectively convey heartbreak’s anguish.”
— Kirkus Reviews
Left. There is the absence There is the wound the shock, the rage, the disbelief and the grief and more for the sinking, suffering heart. In these poems, Wade Stevenson realistically surrounds the departed love with his private raw emotions and with the most wonderful metaphors, fantastic in fact, and with them the poet in his craft knits his hurt into poetry.
— Michael Basinski
Many poems and poetry collections focus on the presence of love, but “The Absence Of The Loved” is about that aftermath where love is gone, poetically describing the void left behind, and what happens when transformation and change confront a relationship “This morning we were born for something else.” However, this book is not just about loss. In the end, the poet transfigures his loss into a vibrant, radiant presence. The young woman that he loved becomes a symbol for “the loved.” In the gorgeous final poem, “You and You Again,” the circle is closed, there is no more absence — what remains is Amor.
— D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review
“Stevenson’s poems, sometimes tender, sometimes an unnerving evisceration of the heart, explore the cost of loving too deeply, the things one loses to love, and the parts that are left to him when that love has vanished. “The Absence Of The Loved” is both love lost and love redeemed. Tissue required.”
—P.J. Lazos, author of Oil and Water

How does absence become presence? How does darkness become light? This is the mystery at the heart of "The Absence Of The Loved."In her Afterword, Sandra Fluck explores this idea as well as other major themes developed in the book. I liked the narrative progression, how the language moved through various gradations and nuances of feeling. The poet uses his "lyrical I" to express universal feelings about the loss of love in a tender, intimate, moving way. The poem "The Last Letter" sums it up: "You wrote me a long letter / Which should have been beautiful / But when at last I read it / I tore it up --- / I couldn't stand the beauty"

The Absence Of The Loved Wade Stevenson 9781609642747 Books Reviews
“The Absence Of The Loved” is a remarkable collection of poetry. It lives beyond the page.”
Okay, this book can be summarized in one sentence A collection of poignant poems celebrating the presence, or lamenting the absence, of a loved one. Its literary adventures are as diverse as the style employed in writing the poems its pages contain. From beautifully penned pieces like LOVE'S LAST LIGHT to dark renditions like LETTING GO, NOT, Author Wade Stevenson has succeeded in bringing together both the weird and the shine of poetry into one volume, or should I say, under one roof?
What struck me as I went through this book was the conspicuous dedication Wade put into these poems. Yes, some of them I couldn’t quite grasp, but the majority I took something out of made me realize the kaleidoscopic nature of the book's main theme, which is love. For every two or three lovers out there having a wonderful time there must be one couple finding it hard to move on after betrayal and loss. The poems in this volume capture the tipping phenomenon of love. The scale balance analogy, which identifies a tipping point in any relationship. For example, a good showing from either or both partners would help keep their affair in healthy territory, and a bad call from either or both of them would likely destroy what they have built together.
Of course, for a project of this magnitude, grammatical errors and typos would be nonexistent, just as I discovered. The interior eBook design was also not a problem for my coffee reader, and I enjoyed the poems while the pages lasted.
And yes, the book cover is brilliant. I think it captures the absence of love, using a setting sun.
For a small volume, The Absence of the Loved packs in many poems.
At first, reading Absence of the Loved I felt the poems had too many metaphors. They were tripping themselves up.
The second poem I read, titled Self-Portrait, had such enthusiasm that it made it difficult to put this book down.
As the title of the book suggests, without a loved one their absence can suddenly be a stark reminder of the realities of life.
These poems are taking us through a relationship the end, the quarrels, the beauty of a woman, regrets and loss. They speak of the absent person as if trying to reach them but are unable to.
The poems blaze on and off, with exclamation marks punctuated through the pages. It did make me wonder if the author has attended an open mic night. The poems are very suited for this purpose. Poem Mistress of the Mattress is a gem, with a metaphor that works at the close of the poem.
In poem Must I? Must you?
I felt for the narrator in lines "in battle against each other or me
Latched too much in you because I
Rebel poet! sought to quench
Myself in your velvet V"
And "If I wired some funds to Western Union?
You slipped away as easily as money"
A glorious and plaintive poem.
I do think there is too much in this book. Some of the better poems can be let down by the lesser poems.
The poems also become racier and it feels as if the narrator has begun to let up on his grief and reflect more on his mistakes.
I do like this book. By the final pages I was remembering my own experiences of love and found the whole of Absence of the Loved nostalgic.
I think anybody going through heartbreak will find solace in this book.
